The Porto funicular, a story that goes back a long way

We don't always know it, but the current funicular in Porto is the second built by the city. The first dates from 1891, but quickly closed 2 years later following a serious accident. It was never put back into service, but the idea of offering a means of transport between the quays and the top of Porto appealed. The renovation of the Ribeira quays district at the time finally convinced the municipality which contacted the Italian company Agudio to take care of the work. A few years later, in 2004, a brand new funicular was inaugurated in Porto.
